The distillery

Clynelish was founded in 1819 by Marquess of Stafford who later became the 1st Duke of Sutherland.

The Duke and wis wife owned a vast area of land which produced barley, and the distillery would provide another way to utilize the excess of grain.

Over the years the distillery passed from owner to owner, until the distillery expanded around 1896, and was upped to around 580,000 liters.

To attend the increase in demand in 1967 a new distillery side by side the old one. Finally, after a year operation the 2 distilleries, the old one was shut down.

By 1969 facing a drought on the Caol Ila distillery Diageo reopened the old distillery of Clynelish under the name Brora, and started making peated whisky in that area. Brora produced whisky until 1983 and following its closure is one of the most rare and desired whiskies in the world.

Usually up to 95% is use as a component in Johnnie Walker blends.
