Tasting Note

Burghound 90, Allen Meadows

An airy, distinctly cool and restrained nose somewhat grudgingly offers up an array of the essence of pear, apple, acacia and an interesting whiff of just sliced lime. The rich and solidly concentrated medium-bodied flavors are at once succulent and seductive before terminating in a similar zest-inflected finish that offers notably better depth and persistence. Lovely and excellent quality here for a villages Puligny. Drink: 2027+

Producer note: Paul Pernot's son Philippe presented the wines while noting that the "2021 growing season was frankly extremely difficult as it began with a devastating frost. We protected some vineyards but how effective it was is debatable. We had some vineyards destroyed to the point of 90%. For example, in Blagny we made 2 barrels instead of 20 and in Folatières we made 8 barrels rather than 60! And in Champ Canet we lost the entire crop and the Chalumeaux was scarcely better. In fact, the only vineyard where we didn't do too badly were the Pucelles and the Puligny villages as they are a bit lower down the slope where the damage was less consequential. The losses in Bienvenues and Bâtard came in around 50% and about the only encouraging aspect of the vintage is that the quality is actually excellent though I confess to not thinking it would be at the time we began picking on the September 22nd."

The 2021s were bottled in July 2022 using the Diam brand composite cork. I found the quality of the Pernot 2021s to be some of the best that I have ever seen from them and given their relatively reasonable pricing in most markets, they're absolutely worth checking out. Note that the Chalumeaux and Champ Canet were obviously not presented.

Winery

Paul Pernot is a Burgundian wine estate situated in Puligny-Montrachet which is particularly well-known for its classically-styled Chardonnay wines from that region. Approximately 10 hectares (25 acres) of grapes were planted when the famed négociant created it in 1959. Remaining in production, many were planted between 1957 and 1961.
